Normally containing repetitive or hypnotic song writing and having a heavy focus on atmosphere, these albums are not for the casual listen – they require immediate and constant attention as they take you on an epic journey into the mind and soul of the artist. Still the same person, just with a lot of extra experience, travel and influences that has shaped them into a more mature and enjoyable character.Ĩ0 minute albums are a mixed bag in black metal. Think of it like an old photograph of a friend.
If expecting a natural prequel to IIII then the listener may be disappointed however this is so much more than a demo - it should be treated like an older Farsot full length. These clean interludes in the songs are a refreshing change in the progression of the songs - it is just a shame that every song has a very similar approach and similar sounding interlude.Ġ42103Freitod is not IIII but does not disappoint. All songs bar the intro and outro have a very similar formula: raw, nearly depressive black metal that breaks into a cleaner guitar section halfway through the song before continuing with the black metal attack. Individually every song is a well written, emotive and enjoyable black metal song, however as an album, the songs have striking similarities that lead to the album being somewhat predictable. Combined with the bass being far less noticeable and further back in the mix, Farsot’s demo reminds much more of a pure black metal band than one that draws from a range of influences like IIII.Ġ42103Freitod has only one major flaw. Taking on a far rawer, less produced and ‘dry’ guitar sound sees 042103Freitod drawing on the influence of Burzum and other old school black metal bands. Vocally similar to IIII, it is largely the guitars and smaller role of the bass that separates the two. Such is the case with 042103Freitod - every way Farsot but younger, rawer… nearly a different band, but amazing nonetheless. The person is instantly recognisable, but you cannot believe how somewhat alien they look and how much they have matured since. The first spin of this disc is like looking at a ten year old photograph of a friend. It is always surprising then, when exploring older songs from a band that you find a hidden gem.īefore their masterpiece IIII came 042103Freitod, a rather strange predecessor to what is one of the greatest black metal albums of all time. After all, the real deal is on the horizon. The band no doubt puts their heart and soul into the demo material, fully knowing that due to production and lesser distribution it will never get the success that it may deserve. They are demos for a reason - usually a way for a band to experiment with their sound and to get some promotion. It's hard to zero in on a specific inspiration. It shouldn’t be expected that a demo, especially one released before any full length material, is going to blow your mind. Inspiration for my original work - novels, screenplays, librettos, lyrics comes from a variety of sources, experiences, passions and, I guess, serendipity. More news will be out later this year about the future of the complete trilogy. The complete trilogy was published last year by Skyhorse Books.
That was their loss.īut it's gone away into the dustbin of film-trash.Īfter having the first novel in the Internet (1998), I held back publishing the third book, Butterfly: Tomorrow's Children, anticipating what became Kindle, Nook, iPad, ETC. They told me they had "a better story", and went ahead and made that terrible film - a complete downer after the uplifting/feel-good Cocoon. They had the manuscript for Metamorphosis. The producers and studio knew that Cocoon was the first book of a trilogy. The novel was a best seller here and internationally. It had great reviews, millions went to see it, two academy awards and it still plays around the world. But after spending much time in "Hollywood" I was not surprised. It had great reviews …more More than disappointed.
